The Art of Handmade Papermaking One-day Workshop

Participants will be introduced to the basic fundamentals of handmade papermaking. The focus of the course will be to form sheets from a variety of pulps. A number of working methods will be considered including, poring pulp, pigments, archival advantages and paper additives. Each participant will produce a variety of 5x7 sheets.

 

 

Show examples of and explain the best-suited use for the different types of fiber.

Demonstrate process of breaking down fiber in blender.

Demonstrate process of pigmenting abaca. Explain the use of chemical additives that aid in the processes of papermaking. Students help set up four tubs of cold water, one for white, two for color and one to rinse their mold and deckle. Each student should have sponge and small container in which excess water will be squeezed.

Demonstrate how to pull a sheet of paper and how to add various embedments.

Discussion of student's ideas and troubleshooting

Each student should make at least five samples of various embedments.
